Fjeldberg – Devotion for September 22nd, 2026
READ (Genesis 9:13-15)
“I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.”
REFLECT
When God says, “I have set my bow in the clouds” the Hebrew word for “bow” does not refer just to pretty colorful rainbows. The Hebrew word used here is the word for an archer’s bow. God’s promise or God’s covenant is that God is putting away God’s weapons. God is not going to be a destroying, killing kind of god. God does not want to do us harm. Let that message sink in!
There is another thing I find interesting (and puzzling) in this story. God says, “When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant.” The rainbow in the sky is not a reminder for us; it’s a reminder for GOD! What does that even mean? God needs a reminder that God will not be a god of destruction? It’s as if God has a giant Post-It note in the sky that says, “No matter how angry you are… DON’T DO IT!” Maybe we could all learn something from God. Where would you post your reminder?
PRAY
God, of covenant promise, we thank you for being patient and merciful with us. Teach us and lead us by your example. Help us to put away all our weapons: the cruelty, the hostility, the vicious words, and the actual weapons we use to kill each other. Show us how to be kind, merciful, and forgiving even when there is sin. And give us reminders, lots of reminders, because we need them. We ask this in the name of Your merciful Son, Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
