Fjeldberg – Devotion for September 3rd, 2026
READ (Matthew 16:21-23)
From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes and be killed and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you." But he turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me, for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.
REFLECT
In these verses Jesus is nearing the end of his earthly life. In verse 22, the ever-impulsive Peter pulls Jesus aside and gives him some advice about what Jesus’ next steps should be. And it’s pretty easy to smile and think, “oh, Peter, what were you thinking? Telling the Lord how things should go?”
And yet, how easy it is to tell God in our prayers what I think should happen next. Jesus reminds Peter to get behind him, that he needs to set his mind on divine things rather than earthly things.
Pastor encouraged us on Sunday to move from admiring Jesus to following Him. Just like Jesus reminded Peter, we can also be reminded to get behind Jesus and follow him. Setting our hearts and minds on divine things will help us to follow Jesus and get our priorities in order.
PRAY
Jesus, help me follow you. I want to keep my heart and mind set on you and your kingdom. Let your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven--in my life, and in the lives of all your followers. Amen.
