Fjeldberg – Devotion for May 14th, 2026
READ (Acts 1:9-11)
After Jesus said these things, as they were watching, he was lifted up and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going away and as they were staring toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood next to them. They said, “Galileans, why are you standing here, looking toward heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you saw him go into heaven.”
REFLECT
Today is the day we celebrate when Jesus ascended into heaven, forty days after rising from the dead and appearing to the disciples. Following Jesus was not easy for those first-century disciples; they risked everything to follow him. When they were with Jesus, they experienced a comfort and peace that felt very different from when they were away from him. As Jesus was blessing the disciples, he ascended into heaven, just as he had promised.
Obviously, seeing Jesus (or anyone) ascend into the heavens would have been a scary thing to witness. As the disciples stood there staring up into heaven, trying to come to terms with what had just happened, two angels asked them why they were looking up. It serves as a reminder to them, and to us, not to keep our heads craned toward heaven, simply waiting for Jesus to return and do something.
Instead, you and I are called to go out into this broken, messy, and beautiful world to share God’s love. Ascension Day reminds us that even when it feels scary or uncertain to go out and love our neighbors, Jesus has not abandoned us. Through the Spirit, God continues to send us, guide us, and equip us to share God’s love with the world.
PRAY
God of all creation, we thank you for all the ways that you bless us and send us. We ask that you make your call clear to us, so that we can be filled with courage to go out into our world to share your love. Amen.
