Fjeldberg – Devotion for March 31st, 2026
READ (Zachariah 9:9)
Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
REFLECT
As Jesus entered Jerusalem, many believed He was the long-awaited Messiah. For such an important moment, we might imagine Him riding into the city on a powerful stallion with a high-stepping gait, displaying the grandeur and authority of a king. Instead, Jesus rode a donkey. Throughout the Bible, kings often rode donkeys during times of peace. By entering Jerusalem this way, Jesus revealed the kind of King He truly is—gentle, humble, and bringing peace to God’s people.
As humans, we often place our hope in what appears to be the biggest, loudest, strongest, or most dramatic solution. We assume those responses will bring the best results. Yet many times we are left disappointed when things do not turn out the way we expected. God often works differently than we imagine. Sometimes the quieter, gentler response—the one that seems small or even weak—is the very way God chooses to work. In those moments, His peace can shine through the darkness and gently guide our path forward.
PRAY
God who guides us, thank you for showing us that true strength can also be found in humility and peace. Help us to trust in your ways, even when they are quiet and unexpected. Teach us to respond with gentleness and faith, allowing your light to guide our steps each day. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
