Fjeldberg – Devotion for  July 9th, 2026

READ (Psalm John 4:13-14)

"Jesus said to her, 'Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’”

REFLECT
In the last week, we’ve experienced water, water, water everywhere in the form of torrential rains causing flooding. I’ve been to Hawaii twice in my life and was totally amazed at the beauty of the ocean. Again, water as far as you could see. One day I was walking along the beach and in the heat, I was very thirsty, but didn’t have any fresh water to drink. The ocean water was so clear and looked good enough to drink. However, I knew the ocean was salt water, and a drink of it would not quench my thirst and I would become more thirsty because drinking salt water can cause dehydration. I could hardly wait to get back to my hotel where I could find a nice, cold bottle of drinking water.

True quenching of physical thirst doesn't come from a drink of salt water from the ocean, thirst is quenched when we drink fresh, filtered water. Our spiritual thirst can only be quenched by God, who is the fountain of life and the spring of living water. The Holy Spirit provides this living water and once we satisfy our thirst with living water, we will never thirst again.

PRAY

Lord, thank you for spiritually refreshing my soul with living water through Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Forgive me for trying to fill my life with temporary things that cannot truly satisfy. Help me to drink deeply of Your unfailing love today and make me a channel of Your grace to the thirsty people I meet. Amen.
