Fjeldberg – Devotion for September 25th, 2025

READ (John 16:33)
“I have told you all of this that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows, but take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

REFLECT

One of my employment positions was at facilities where research in animal diseases, development of biologics, responding to outbreaks of animal diseases, etc. were their missions. One day, a Supervisor in charge of a Unit that worked with an infectious animal disease, which could also infect humans, came into my Health Unit office. I reviewed the updated protocol of what to do if an employee was accidentally exposed to the disease. We discussed what medication would be provided, the symptoms of the disease in humans, the need to report the incident as soon as possible, etc.

During our discussion, I apparently used the term “God willing.” The Supervisor asked, “Mary, don't tell me you believe in God ?” I responded, “Yes I do”, but I admitted there were times of doubt in my nursing career and personal life. For example, when I made home visits to determine if a child was being abused or when loved ones had died. However, believing is the only way I can make sense of what has happened to those I have cared for and circumstances in my own life. God hasn't always answered my prayers with outcomes I had hoped for, but I trust that God has done and will do what is right.

PRAY:

Dear God,
Thank you for the assurance that whatever circumstances we face in our lives we can put our trust in you. Amen.
