Bible Text
“O Lord my Lord, act on my behalf for your name’s sake.”
(Psalm 109:21)
Reflect
In today’s Bible text, the psalmist David asks God to help him. We often do the same, in the many prayers that we send. But not every prayer can be answered, much as the members of two competing teams cannot have everyone’s prayers for victory be answered. Only one team can win! But in this text, an important qualification is made, that the result of the help requested will be to God’s advantage, perhaps that his name will be praised or that some righteous goal will be achieved. Alas, we may try but can never know God’s full plan and may be discouraged if our request is not granted. When that happens, it’s helpful to remember, what Jesus taught us to pray, “Thy will be done...”
Pray
Dear God, thank you for listening to our prayers. Please give us the wisdom to know, when we are asking for help, that it is for those things that are consistent with your plans for this world. Please help us understand when our request is not answered. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
