Bible Text
Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again and again. Anyone who drinks the water I give will never thirst—not ever. The water I give will be an artesian spring within, gushing fountains of endless life.” The woman said, “Sir, give me this water so I won’t ever get thirsty, won’t ever have to come back to this well again!”
(John 4:13-15)

Reflect
These verses are part of the Samaritan woman at the well. You can read the whole story in John, chapter 4. Jesus asked the woman for a drink of water and started a conversation. He revealed something about himself to her: “If you knew the generosity of God and who I am, you would be asking me for a drink, and I would give you fresh, living water.”

Suddenly this random interaction with a stranger takes an unexpected turn for the Samaritan woman. Here was a tired, thirsty traveler offering her a gift; not a gift she had been looking for, but still just what she needed. What did she do? She ran to get her neighbors, to share the stranger’s gift with her community.

We can all be watchful for God’s unexpected gifts of blessing at surprising moments in our days. God’s gift will always be just what you need.

Pray
Gracious and giving God, we are thankful for the Scriptures, where you meet us and teach us. Help us to be aware of your gifts in the world around us, and the many ways those gifts come to us. May we see with clarity your presence in our lives. Amen.
