Fjeldberg – Devotion for Aug 19th, 2025
READ (Job 39:26-27)
“Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom and spread his wings toward the south? Does the eagle soar at your command and build his nest on high?”
REFLECT
These verses are a section of God’s response to Job getting him to realize God is the master in control. They came to mind while watching a hummingbird at our feeder the other day.
For years human understanding was that due to their small wingspan compared to body size they should not be able to fly at all, much less hover and fly backward. A biologist finally caught one in high-speed photography, slowed it down and discovered the hummingbird wing rotates uniquely in a figure eight pattern thus generating lift in both directions unlike most birds that only create lift on the down stroke.
God did not mention hummingbirds to Job leaving the puzzle for us to later unravel why hawks and eagles fly one way and hummingbirds another.
We can only stand in awe at the diversity of creation and the power of our God who made it all in such minute detail.
His proclamation regarding creation is found in Gen 1:31 “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.”
PRAY
Loving God, we stand amazed at the myriad of details that went into the creation of our universe. We are humbled in the midst of all you have created and recognize we are dependent on you for all we need. Help us to truly appreciate all you have provided for us including the beauty of a hummingbird in flight. Amen
