Fjeldberg – Devotion for August 22, 2024
READ (Romans 12:2) "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will."
REFLECT I have two kids who are preparing to go back to school. Where did the summer go? There were so many things I wanted us to go see and do before school started back up, and I feel like we've missed many of them. Everyone tells me to appreciate the time I have with the kids while they're young as it goes too fast. I'll admit, as a new parent I found this to be very frustrating as the days seemed so very long. Now, with the kids in school, full of activities, and very friend-centric, I'm definitely feeling that time with them is finite.
Did we do everything we wanted to do this summer? No. Did we have a great summer? You bet. What was the difference? Focusing on the mindset, understanding what we can control vs what is out of our control and making the most out of that. Do you suppose it's God's will that we go on epic adventures, or that we be present and appreciate the moments we are given? We had more fun as a family playing Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, Pizza (check it out, it's amazing!) at home than we did trying to force a family outing. The difference was the mindset and allowing connection to happen, rather than trying to control it and feel let down when it doesn't go according to plan.
As a parent, I often wonder if God is looking down on us with a chuckle saying "Well, that was one way to do it. Let's try it again tomorrow!”
PRAY: Gracious God, thank you for the little moments we have in life that have the opportunity to become truly remarkable. Help us to see those moments and live in them fully. In your name we pray, Amen.
