Fjeldberg – Devotion for August 1, 2024

READ (Mark 4:30-32) Again, he said, “What shall we say the King of God is like or what parable shall we use to describe it?  It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on the earth.  Yet, when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all green plants, with such large branches the birds can perch in the shade.”

REFLECT To me, the mustard seed parable relates to faith’s journey.  The seed is planted at Baptism.  Throughout childhood, lessons learned at home and in Sunday School introduce us to the foundations of faith.  Confirmation is a personal affirmation of our Baptismal vows.  Adulthood is a continuation of growing in faith.

On this journey, our faith and trust in God may be tested.  With the loss of loved ones, terminal illnesses, etc., we may ask God, “Why?”  I’ve certainly prayed for different outcomes in those situations.  Yet, I can’t imagine dealing with those happenings without faith and trust in God and the promise of eternal life.

PRAY: Dear God, thank you for your presence in our lives and for never forsaking us in time of doubt and our need for reassurance and comfort. Amen.
