Fjeldberg – Devotion for April 21st, 2026
READ (Psalm 116:14-15)
I’ll pray in the name of God; I’ll complete what I promised God I’d do, And I’ll do it together with his people.
REFLECT
We were living in a small rural town in Nebraska. It was my turn to lead the Bible study for a group of ladies from our town. There were only two churches in town—a nondenominational church supplied by a Methodist minister and a Roman Catholic Church.
The theme of the study and the scripture passage we were studying has completely slipped my mind. What I do remember is the sleepless night I had before we were to meet the next day. I wrestled with the question that seemed central to the lesson. “If God asked, what would be most difficult possession for you to give up in order to answer his call? I knew the answer but didn’t want to acknowledge it. It would mean relinquishing my most precious treasures—my husband, two daughters and my mother, who was living with us.
After praying and struggling through the night, I said, “Yes, Lord, if that is what you need me to do!”
Ten days later, my mom died unexpectedly. Three months later our family packed up and headed for Wartburg Theological Seminary. We had lived in Nebraska only one and a half years, but God’s angels were in that community, encouraging and supporting our decision.
Four years later, my husband became an ordained pastor. Thus began a new life full of joys, sorrows and challenges, as we attempted to trust and follow where God led.
God calls each of us in different ways to do different tasks. Our job is to listen, trust and follow. A big order, yet He is there to help us with the process.
PRAY
Gracious God, be with us as we strive to do your bidding. Help us to be open to your call and have the courage to follow. In Jesus name, Amen.
