Fjeldberg – Devotion for April 23rd, 2026
READ (John 3:16)
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, whoever believes in Him shall have eternal life.”
REFLECT
“It's for the best.” That's a common phrase perhaps many of us have spoken. I had a conversion with someone who was mourning the loss of a loved one. She said that she appreciated all of the support she had received from family, friends, and neighbors. She said some offered their condolences with the words, “It's for the best.” When her loss became personal, she didn't feel those words offered much comfort in her early stages of grief.
I thought about our conversation. At my age, I've lost grandparents, parents, siblings, extended family and friends. I remembered others speaking those words to me. Honestly, in the early stages of grief, I didn't feel any of their deaths “were for the best.” However, with time to grieve, I realized that their living with paralysis, incurable cancer, pain, and dementia, that death was a release from their suffering. More importantly, understanding that God knows what is best and finding reassurance in God's promise that those who believe will have eternal life.
PRAY
Dear God, Be with those who are mourning the loss of loved ones. May their memories sustain them and God's promise to those who believe will have eternal life may comfort them. Amen.
