worship volunteer job descriptions

Worship Coordinator

Please arrive at the church at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the service. The Coordinator’s responsibilities are to pray for the Holy Spirit’s presence in the service, assist the Pastor, and confirm that the persons assigned to be participants are present:  lector, greeters, ushers, acolyte and/or communion assistants. If any of these persons are not present, you are responsible for finding another volunteer to fulfill that particular responsibility. You may check with David Tesdall for ushers and Pastor Tim for acolytes.  Once all volunteer positions are filled for the service, you will inform Pastor Tim that the service is ready to begin.

If you as Coordinator cannot be present at the worship service to which you are assigned, please arrange for another Worship and Music
Committee member to substitute for you and inform the Parish Secretary as to the change before Thursday morning so the change can be noted in the bulletin.

Lector

The Worship and Music Committee would like to thank you for being a lector. If you are unable to be a lector on the given date, please arrange to trade with someone on the list or contact the Parish Secretary (597-2831).

The lessons to be read will be mailed or emailed to you.  You will read the Psalm and the First and Second Lessons; Pastor Tim will read the Gospel. Please check the bulletin for the order of service so you will know when to come forward to read.

Communion Assistant

1.  Come forward at Pastor’s invitation and receive your communion.
2.  After you have received communion, please cleanse your fingers with the provided moist towelette or lotion on the altar before distributing the elements.
3.  You will usually serve wine. The outside circle of cups in the tray contains white grape juice for those who request it. On occasion you may be called upon to serve the bread.
4.  Acolytes will pick up the used cups.
5.  Following the distribution, you may return to your seat.

If for some reason you are unable to serve as communion assistant, please give the Parish Secretary a call at 597-2831 and a replacement will be secured for you.  Thank you.

If you are unable to serve on your scheduled date, please call:

Altar Guild:  Verda Tesdall – 597-2248
Acolytes:  Church Office – 597-2831

Hosts

The following guidelines and instructions are given so that ushers/greeters can perform their tasks with quiet efficiency and authentic hospitality, enabling everyone to offer reverent worship to God and to enjoy the Christian community.  This important task at Fjeldberg Lutheran complements and advances the mission of our congregation, for it makes both visitors and members feel welcome and wanted.
  • Be at the church approximately 30 minutes prior to the service.
  • Name tags will be available for your use. Please wear them and return them to the box following the service.
  • Distribute bulletins and greet worshipers at both entrances at the back of the sanctuary. Assist folks in any manner they may need (elderly or handicapped, location of restrooms, nursery for infants & toddlers, busy bags for young children). Give extra bulletins to large families/groups.
  • Count attendance sometime during the service and record number on the chart hanging on the wall leading up to the balcony. Don't forget the balcony and the nursery. Count everyone!
  • When receiving the offering, face the alter - do not look down the pew as the plate is passed. If there are 2 acolytes they will be at the end of the pew to advance it to the next pew...otherwise the plate is simply passed by the end person to the pew behind them with ushers remaining in the center aisle. Remember to collect offering from people in the balcony. When all offering is collected, the users will come toward the alter with the offering plates. If is is communion Sunday, the usher should put the alter rail in place after they bring the offering plates to the alter.
  • On communion Sundays, ushers will dismiss worshipers from the center aisle to come forward to receive communion. After receiving communion, people will return to their pews via the side aisles. Please be aware of anyone who does not come forward for communion who may want to be served at their seats and inform the pastor or communion assistants. The ushers will be the last to receive communion and will take down the communion rail.
  • Clean up pews to waste paper and straighten hymnals after the service.

Thank you for serving as an usher/greeter at Fjeldberg Lutheran!

If for some reason you are unable to be an usher/greeter, please find someone who could substitute for you.  If you know by Thursday, you can let the parish secretary know so she can print the correct names in the bulletin.
